About Michael Drange
Hi, I’m
Michael Drange — a singer, songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist, and music educator based in the
San Gabriel Valley, just
east of Los Angeles. I write and perform across a wide
range of genres,
blending pop, soul, jazz, and the Great American
Songbook into a style that’s
uniquely my own.
I was born
in Pocatello, Idaho and raised in Morgantown,
West Virginia. I got my start in music early, taking
piano lessons in
Kindergarten and picking up the tenor sax in fifth
grade. A Billy Joel songbook
I bought at age twelve sparked my passion for
songwriting, and his music
remains a major influence on my work to this day.
After some
detours (including a short-lived stint as a
computer science major), I earned my B.A. in Classical
Saxophone Performance
and later a Master’s in Commercial Music Composing and
Arranging from Cal State
Los Angeles. I’ve released five albums, performed
extensively across Southern
California, and currently play with my jazz-pop quartet
Vested Interest,
the Gem City Jazz Cats big-band, and as a solo
artist. My music is available on
all major streaming platforms.
Since
1994, I’ve also been a proud music teacher at Garvey
Intermediate School in Rosemead, CA. I was named
District Teacher of the Year
in 2005-2006 and held many leadership roles with the
Garvey Education
Association, currently as President.
In 2021, I launched Southern California Singer-Songwriter Radio, a web-based station showcasing original artists from SoCal and beyond — a project that combines my passion for songwriting and community.
Thanks for
